6 field postcards Montmédy 1916 with Verdun reference

Six original cards. One recipient. A field post correspondence from Montmédy to Lampertheim – with handwritten Verdun reference.

This set comprises six original field post cards from Montmédy, France. The cards were sent between June and September 1916 to the same recipient in Lampertheim, Hesse.

They were discovered among old Hungarian postcards. Only when examining the reverses did it become clear that the six cards together tell a small field post story from the First World War.

Six historical views of Montmédy

The fronts show various motifs from Montmédy and its surroundings:

• the fortified upper town with church
• Montmédy with Chauvency-le-Château, Thonne-les-Prés and St. Hubert
• a historical street scene with a German sign
• a town square with shops and horse-drawn carriage
• the fortress and the lower town
• the weekly market in Montmédy

Particularly striking is the street scene with the large German sign:

"Auto 20 km. Exhaust closed!"

The various motifs not only show well-known views of the French fortress town. They also document buildings, shops, means of transport, clothing and public life in 1916.

Original field post stamps and handwritten messages

On the reverses are fully preserved handwritten messages as well as German field post and service stamps.

The specific task of the sender in Verdun is not clear from the card. However, a direct personal and temporal reference to the war year 1916 is preserved.

The six field postcards were not produced as a uniform series of motifs. They differ in design, printing, and publisher.

Nevertheless, they belong together: All cards show Montmédy or its surroundings, date from the same period, and were sent to the same recipient in Lampertheim. Recurring field post and service stamps further confirm the connection.
