The book describes the origin and development of Hungarian folk songs as well as characteristic folk instruments. Historical photographs, musical examples, and a map show regional traditions and musical customs from different parts of Hungary.
Particularly interesting are the historical recordings of musicians, costumes, and traditional instruments like the bagpipe. The text is supplemented by 31 black and white and 16 color plates.
The German edition was published by Corvina. This is the third, enlarged edition, printed in Hungary in 1989. The original Hungarian title is "Magyar népdalok, népi hangszerek".
